Ketone Klarity with Dr. Andi Campitelli

I've been in keto for maybe 15 years at this point. It's something that I stumbled on just for my own health and wellness goals. I started with the ketogenic diet, and now I do both exogenous ketones and the ketogenic diet with my patients. ~Dr. Andi Campitelli

My husband really wanted some fat loss, but I, on the other hand, used to take a nap every single day. So I just needed the energy to stay focused on my kids, to be able to homeschool the girls and to have my brain turned on.

Ketones for me were the energy I needed throughout the entire day. And also, my husband was able to lose 50 pounds of fat.

Over the course of seven years, we've saved and changed so many lives with this product, with our company, with our community, and with incredible thought leaders like Dr. Andi, who agreed to give us her time and answer questions.

Dr. Andi Campitelli

She is the leading North American naturopathic doctor, Ketone thought leader, and educator. She speaks all over the world and she's incredible and very passionate. I have been blessed to hear her and be in the room as she talks and answers some questions for us.

Ketone Klarity with Dr. Andi Campitelli

STEPHANIE: Dr. Andi, are you on?

DR. ANDI: I am here. Hi, how are you?

STEPHANIE: I haven't seen you in such a long time.

DR. ANDI: I know, it's been a long, long time. I'm so excited and happy to join these calls.

STEPHANIE: We are so thankful! Dr. Andi, I want to go through with you, what we did years ago called Ketone Clarity calls. We just want you to dive into who you are, what ketones are, and how they work in your body. Some people just hear about the keto diet, and not about ketones. What are ketones, and how do they work? and then we'll dive into the difference between diet and ketones. So Dr. Andi, tell us all about you.

DR. ANDI: Thank you! I'm so excited to be here. To answer your first question, I've been in keto for maybe 15 years at this point. It's something that I stumbled on just for my own health and wellness goals. I had digestive issues and I kind of stumbled into keto.

I started diving into more research and introducing it into my practice. And then of course, with PRUVIT, I was able to bring in and introduce exogenous ketones to my patients. I started with the ketogenic diet, and now I do both exogenous ketones and the ketogenic diet with my patients.

What Are Ketones?
𝗗𝗿. 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗶 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶

DR. ANDI: Essentially, ketone bodies are the breakdown of fat metabolism. So when we don't have a lot of carbohydrates in our system, our body needs to find another fuel source. We're mostly used to being carbohydrate-fueled. Our body grabs onto that sugar and uses that as fuel that we need to make it through the day.

But in the absence of sugar, the body needs another fuel source, so it picks fat and breaks it down to create fuel.

When you break down that fat, you create something called ketone bodies. With beta-hydroxybutyrate or BHB, which is how I'll refer to it moving forward, is one of the primary ketone bodies that the body will produce. When we're in nutritional ketosis, we break down fat and the blood levels of our BHB go a little bit higher.

𝗢𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗶𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗛𝗕, 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀.

That can be a little bit challenging for some people, depending on your metabolic state and where you're coming from with your health. Some people will transition really quickly, and they'll be in nutritional ketosis in a week or a couple of weeks. While for other people, it can take months. It just depends on your metabolic state.

So that's the difference between "Nutritional Ketosis" and "Exogenous Ketones". That's where exogenous ketones can play a really big role.

STEPHANIE: That is so good, I love it! It's just like, we live in Minnesota and we go to Florida often. So I tell people who are doing the diet that it's like they're driving a car from Minnesota to Florida, while I'm hopping on an airplane and getting there quicker.

Because when we drink this product, it puts us in ketosis in under an hour. A lot of people are here because they see these little packets floating around. So how does it actually works, and what are the benefits of drinking ketones?

DR. ANDI: I love that analogy to where someone's driving versus somebody who is hopping on a plane. And that's kind of exactly what happens. When you're taking this product, you're drinking pure beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB).

I talked about nutritional ketosis earlier, where our body has to break down fat to create these byproducts for our body to be able to use. We have to become keto-adapted for our body to be able to adapt and make use of them, and it can take a long time.

𝗕𝗛𝗕 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆.

But with exogenous ketones, you're drinking pure BHB, which is the product that your body needs to create fuel and use as a fuel source. So if you're drinking BHB, you will elevate the blood level of ketones in your body as if you're in nutritional ketosis. And then your body can use and grab into them as a fuel source.

There is also some interesting research that's been done between carbs and ketones. If there are carbs and ketones available, what does your body pick?
Findings show that your brain, your heart, and your muscle will actually choose ketones over glucose. And in many cases, that's the preferred fuel source for our body.

When we elevate the blood levels of BHB in our body, it's as if we're in nutritional ketosis. And that's when we start to experience the changes in energy, and mental clarity, and the impact that it can have on different inflammatory cascades in our system.

A lot of people gravitate towards ketones for the fat loss components, but it's not a weight loss supplement that people see fat loss as a secondary benefit to what the BHB is doing in your system. You can still have really great benefits from exogenous ketones without having to transition or follow the ketogenic diet.

STEPHANIE: That was actually what I was going to ask you next. Because a lot of people don't want to do keto, and I've got friends who are paleo or whole 30. So can you walk us through what it would look like in somebody's lifestyle?

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱?

DR. ANDI: There are different tiers to it. Like when somebody comes in and they're eating McDonald's 24/7, I'm certainly not putting them on the ketogenic diet. That's just absolutely ridiculous, it's not going to happen.

I love how this allows people the opportunity to experience those benefits when we know it's ridiculous to assume they're going to be in ketosis within the next week. So with some people, it needs to be slow and steady. Don't get overwhelmed by the research or Google. Some people are Googling the ketogenic diet, and just like most of my patients, they're completely lost and they have no idea where to start.

They don't start because they're so overwhelmed and confused. So to make it easy and simple, just wake up in the morning, and then the first thing you need to do is drink the exogenous ketones. That's step one, and then I introduce the dietary changes from there. In my practice, I might introduce some intermittent fasting. Skip breakfast and drink ketones.

Then there are two meals left in the day, so try to make one of them low-carb or zero-carb. That's literally how I get people started.

We're not counting calories, we're not weighing food, it's not meal prepping for 4 hours on a Sunday. It doesn't need to be that intense, and I think that's what people often think it is. So they get so overwhelmed, it can be so daunting and that's why they just forget about it.

But that's definitely not what you have to do. It's actually very easy. Just wake up and drink your ketones. Then you have 2 main meals left in the day, try and cut the carbs out of one and avoid fast food if you can.
We can then start to make more dietary changes from there. But that's literally all you have to do as a start.

STEPHANIE: I love that because it's so simple! If you're not hungry, don't eat. A lot of people are snacking too much or eating too much food. And so this product helps with your appetite control immensely.

Dr. Andi, you mentioned intermittent fasting and drinking ketones. I do have a lot of people asking if this can break your fasting.

DR. ANDI: I tell my patients to drink it in the fasting window. We have years and years of research on fasting. The benefits of fasting or what fasting does for you. The benefits of fasting were due to the body creating ketones or the production of ketone bodies in that fasting state. And so if we're creating ketone bodies in that fasting window, I'm perfectly fine with my patients drinking ketones. Because it encourages the process that we're trying to step into while we're fasting.

𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗴𝘆.

We're trying to turn on the process of autophagy, which means clearing out dead damaged cells and allowing your body to renew. Fasting and BHB both turn that process on.

Drinking Ketones actually optimizes the benefit in that fasting window. And so I always encourage my patients to drink it. You also mentioned appetite control, which is really helpful. If people get hungry in the morning or they think they're not going to make it through, ketones will help to control their appetite and food cravings.

You'd be surprised at how easy it is, even though it sounds a little bit daunting for those who've never done it before.

STEPHANIE: I love that! I've got two more questions for you. Is there a period of time when these exogenous ketones will stop your body from making its own ketones? Or does it work along with your body?

DR. ANDI: It actually works with your body. That's a great question, especially for those who are already in nutritional ketosis. They tend to ask, "Why would I take this product then?". So for those people who are already in nutritional ketosis, that's also a huge question.

Findings show that that's not what happens. It doesn't shut your body's own ketone production off. It amplifies ketone production. You will actually have a higher blood level of ketones, so you can achieve an even greater blood BHB level. Your body will still make ketones, and the product is just an amplification. They weren't synergistically involved, or they were not together.

STEPHANIE: I love that! What is your favorite flavor of ketones?

DR. ANDI: I actually like the Lime flavor you're holding. I have a few different flavors too.

STEPHANIE: You're a mom, and I love listening to you talk about women's health, breast milk, and having ketones in there. So before you go, is there anything that you're super passionate about that you want to share with the Pruvit community?

DR. ANDI: I love the question about hormones because I focus a lot on women's health and I treat a lot of moms. I love all the research that's being done in the space of hormonal balance. I get tons of questions about women with PCOS and fertility issues. Also in our practice, we have a really big focus on longevity and regenerative medicine, sort of the anti-aging space.

It's essentially optimizing our health and our lifespan. I'm looking a lot at all those things that will help optimize our longevity and our health.
Because we don't just want to live longer, we want to live better. We want to enhance the quality of life in our years, not just the number of years in our life. Ketones are a big part of that, and a lot of other things as well.

So I love the research that looks into beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and the impact it has on longevity in our genes. That's a really big focus as well.

STEPHANIE: I love it! Dr. Andi, thank you so much for your time. We love having you, and I'm so excited to hear about your sweet baby in January. You are so amazing, we appreciate it. I look forward to seeing you at the next Keto Academy or maybe you'll be at Epic.

DR. ANDI: I will! That'll be my last one, and I'll be pushing it.

STEPHANIE: We are so excited to see you. Thank you so much for giving us some of your time tonight.

DR. ANDI: No problem! Thank you!

CHRIS WEBB

𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲, 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀.

STEPHANIE: My friend Chris Webb, how are you? I see you here.

CHRIS WEBB: Hey, I'm great

STEPHANIE: Awesome! So, Chris, your story is different from ketones. Will you share with the community why you drink them and the benefits that you've gotten from them?

CHRIS: Absolutely! I have to say, I'm so excited to be on this call, and to be here with Dr. Andi. So when I first started drinking ketones, in 2018 February. I was listening to Dr. Andi every week on our calls. And I was able to get so much great information, just like you guys got tonight.

Prior to ketones, when I was turning 40, I knew I had to change something. I was a mess, I was pushing 200 pounds, I'm 5'6, and I was making some very poor decisions in my life.

And so I turned 40 and the only thing that changed was I actually got worse. And so 41 came around, and I realized that I gotta do something. My wife and I kind of connected on that level and we both agreed to make something happen. And that's when we started our health and wellness

journey.

CHRIS: We both actually lost 50 pounds a piece. We started running and Spartan racing. We actually opened up a training center here in our town. My wife was hit training, and I was helping people with an obstacle course and coaching.

𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝘀 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄, 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱.

The process of starting your fitness journey is hard, but it had to be done. I think a lot of us kind of hit that moment in our lives.
Maybe you didn't, but we did. We hit that moment where we had to make a decision to change something.

We did it the hard way, and what I realized looking back now and having conversations with a lot of people is that we all know what to do. It's not hard what to do, we all know what to do. Like improving our body composition, whatever our goals are for body composition, we all know what to do. That's not the hard part. The hard part is staying consistent and doing it for a long period of time and creating a lifestyle out of it.

Moving forward was always the hard part, and that's probably true for a lot of people who are not in a place where they've created a lifestyle yet.

During this time, we were introduced to a lot of different products, supplements, and things like that. As probably a lot of you know, the majority of it is crap, and there are a lot of them out there. But at the same time, I was looking for something to up my performance because we were running marathons and Spartan Races.

We just wanted to take it to the next level. And having that openness of searching for things, or being open to new things, things just kind of showed up in our lives. One of the things that showed up was when my wife watched someone sharing ketones on their social media. She grabbed the video, she came over, and I remember I was in the house when she showed it to me.

I knew nothing about anything. I didn't know the difference between a ketone and a keystone bear. And she showed me this video and all it hit me was "Oh, that's the keto diet". I don't want anything to do with the keto diet. I don't want anything to do with the word diet. I don't want anything to do with eliminating pasta, bread, and no cookies. That's just not me.

𝗚𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲.

But thanks to our phones picking up all of our conversations, it kept showing back into my social media. And what really got my attention is that there were some athletes talking about ketones and not having to do the diet.

CHRIS: So I watched some interviews with some high-performance athletes, and they were talking about not having to use pre-workout anymore, their performance level going up, and not having to do things for endurance training. And if you have a lot of that stuff, it's actually just pure sugar. And it keeps you from hitting a wall, but if you ever have too much of it, for me, it wrecks my stomach. That was the worst part of endurance and that was the hardest part for me.

Listening to these athletes talking about not having to worry about that anymore, and how they can dual fuel. They can carb load and have ketones, which was very interesting to me. So that lit me and my wife up, and we were open to researching some more. So we finally decided to try it. It didn't matter how much research I was going to do, because if they didn't work for me, I wasn't going to use them.

Honestly, in full transparency, I was hoping that they would work. I was hoping that they would be what I was reading about. So on day one when we had the Ketones, we felt incredible and we had an amazing workout. We felt great throughout the day.

And so my wife and I were having conversations like we felt it was in our heads. I was thinking because I wanted it to work, that's probably why I feel like it's working.

On day two, it was the same thing and after that, I was sold. We decided to get our order in and start drinking ketones. I was using them for marathons and many different things. But one of the things that really stood out to me the most was it helped me sleep. Before drinking ketones, I had horrible sleep. And just a few days into drinking ketones, I wasn't watching TV anymore. We actually moved the TV out of the room, and it's been almost five years of no TV going to bed at night.

𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀.

And though that wasn't something I was looking for or even thought about in the past, that actually played a huge role in my life. My athletic performance and sleep got better.
There is a ton of science behind muscle protection and preservation, and I'm glad Dr. Andi talked about the research on the long-term effects of what we're doing here.

I'll be 51 next month, and we just had our first grandchild a month and a half ago. And so I want to be even better, I'm looking to be better from doing what we're doing with ketones, with the science, and with this community. It's amazing.

So the science behind all of this, I really don't know. Just like how I don't know how light bulbs work, but I use them every day. So I really don't care how ketones work, but they work and I use them.

And so two things that really stood out for me, besides the performance, the sleep, and my body composition, is my mood. I'm just in a better mood. I got sober seven years ago, and I started drinking ketones almost five years ago. There was a two-year span of I was not a great guy to be around. I didn't even want to be around myself, and I thought I lost everything in my life.

When I quit drinking, I didn't know who I was. So I didn't want to be around anybody. What's interesting was when I started drinking ketones, I felt like I got myself back. I found myself again and I found my happiness again.

That really played a role in my continuing to pursue better. Being a better husband, father, and now a better grandfather. And I can't do those things unless I'm a better version of myself.

𝗞𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁, 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜'𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.
I look back now, and I'm just so glad that we tested ketones for ourselves and then drew our own conclusions after. I'm really happy that we did that.

STEPHANIE: I love it, Chris! I love your story because it's really different. I've worked out with you and I quit early because you're so focused and fierce, it was kind of scary in a good way. Muscle preservation for you is a real thing.
